2 PM: Rui Galopim de Carvalho, FGA DGA., Presenting:
Clarifying Precious Coral

Join renowned gemologist Rui Galopim de Carvalho for a fascinating look at coral.
Along with other biogenic substances, precious corals are among the oldest gem materials used by humankind. The material corresponds to the bio-mineralized exoskeleton of a limited number of marine species and much controversy and misinformation is typically associated with these materials. A clarification is, therefore, in order.

3 PM Mrs. Agnieszka Klikowicz-Kosior and Mr. Michal Kosior, Presenting:
Amber: A Fossilized Organic Gem Material of Plant Origin

The presentation explores amber, a fossilized organic gem material of plant origin, and provides definitions of different types with various shapes, colors, forms, and localities. It explains the factors that influence the evaluation of amber quality and value, and covers common tests used to distinguish genuine amber from imitations, as well as laboratory techniques for identifying amber. While Baltic amber is the dominant type in the worldwide market, this presentation specifically focuses on this particular type of amber showcasing examples of its use in contemporary design.
Organics comprise some of the most challenging materials to evaluate. Subtle differences in quality can have significant influence on value. Treatments as well as imitations are commonly encountered but not always recognized! Whether your appraisal practice focuses on contemporary or estate jewelry, you will not want to miss this opportunity to learn more about some of these wonderfully complex organic gem materials.
