SUMMARY:Webinar! The Complexities of Appraising Antique & Period Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:Recording for all attendees will be available until April 4\, 2026  midnight \n\n\n\nAntique Diamond Cuts in Contemporary Appraisal Practice:  Mistakes and Misclassification \n\n\n\nCeline Rose David\, FGAWhen antique diamond cuts are assessed using modern cut standards\, the issue extends beyond terminology. Such misapplication can materially distort valuation conclusions\, affect attribution\, and compromise the integrity of appraisal reporting. Accurate identification is therefore not a matter of stylistic preference\, but an essential element of defensible professional practice. The proportions\, symmetry\, structural characteristics\, and light performance of antique cuts are direct expressions of the technological capabilities and aesthetic priorities of their era and must be evaluated within that historical context. \n\n\n\nJewelry – Back to FrontDuncan Parker\, FGAExploring antique jewels based on the effect on value brought about by knowledge of makers\, countries of origin\, condition of the jewels\, presence of documentation and boxes\, provenance\, and whether items have been altered? When the Little Things Mean a Lot:  The Effects of Minor Deails on Value – Jessie English\, GIA GGSometimes\, minor details can significantly affect value—if you know what to look for. In this talk\, Jessie will discuss the subtle features in jewelry that may greatly impact the appraisal of vintage and antique pieces. Rather than focusing on major factors such as big designers and fancy stones\, she will highlight smaller aspects like functional parts\, construction and material choices\, embellishments\, and other small\, but possibly significant elements. \n\n\n\nCoins Transformed:  Art\, Identify and Sentiments – Gail Brett Levine\, GIA GGFor centuries\, coins have been carried as symbols of good fortune. Over time\, individuals began altering coins—by bending\, carving\, or engraving them—to imbue additional personal or symbolic meaning and to distinguish them from ordinary currency. \n\n\n\nIn the United States\, engraved coins emerged during the Civil War as a means of soldier identification and later gained popularity as a form of jewelry from the 1870s through the early twentieth century. These engraved coins are now commonly referred to as love tokens. \n\n\n\nNAJA Members: $25Nonmembers: $50 \n\n\n\nRegistration now open at: https://tinyurl.com/NAJAMarch26

SUMMARY:64th Annual ACE©It Mid-Year VIRTUAL Education Conference
DESCRIPTION:Conference Location:LIVE STREAM in Your Home!\n\n\n\nThe program runs from noon to 4 PM EST\, Saturday and noon to 4 PM on SundayConference Program will be recorded and available until midnight on Sunday\, August 17\, 2025 \n\n\n\n\nOnly $150 for the webinar and recording for NAJA members\n\n\n\n$200 for the webinar and recording for NON-members\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, August 9\, 2025Noon:Duncan Parker\, FGA\, Presenting:Jewels Before the End of a Fixed Gold Price: The 1960sIn the 1960s\, gold was on a fixed price per ounce\, and this was an important factor that contributed to the styles\, forms and size of jewels in the period. However\, many other social and demographic factors contributed to the jewels that people designed\, built\, and chose to wear 50 or 60 years ago. We will explore the styles\, designs\, designers\, materials and factors that contributed to the jewels we still see in collections that come to us for appraisal. \n\n\n\n1 PM:Deborah Finleon\, GIA GG and Sherlene Bradbury\, GIA GG\, Presenting:Cash and ContractsWe will be discussing the ins and outs of fees and contracts\, including a brief discussion of setting up a fee structure that works for your business and for you. We’ll cover the basics of contracts\, engagement agreements\, and retainers – when you need them and when you don’t\, as well as what to include to cover yourself and make sure you get paid. Then\, we’ll look at some concrete examples to get you started! \n\n\n\n2 PM: Michael Johnson\, GIA GG\, Presenting:Swiss Luxury Watches\, Understanding the History\, Assessing the ValueThis class will begin with a brief tour through Swiss Watch Making History. This history will help youunderstand why the Swiss Watch Making Industry is where it is and give you great talking points to share with your clients. We will next take a deeper dive into several important Swiss watch companies including\, Rolex\, Tudor\, Jaeger-LeCoultre\, Ulysse Nardin\, Cartier\, Louis Moinet\, IWC Schaffhausen\, and Parmigiani. Finally\, we will learn how to identify authenticity\, assess condition\, and assign values for appraisals or purchasing. If you\, Appraise\, purchase\, or sell watches this class will help you increase your confidence and give you confidence as you communicate with your clients about watches. \n\n\n\n3 PM: Al Gilbertson\, GIA GG\, Presenting:Jewelry ForensicsMany jewelry trade professionals already go through a process to identify\, analyze\, and assess an item’s quality and nature. Is it comprehensive and systematic? Does it help determine if the item is ‘fit for purpose?’ A ‘forensic’ approach that involves asking 12 questions about the piece that encompasses its materials (metals\, gems)\, method of construction\, and ultimate quality\, focusing on the risk of failure when worn\, provides a great framework to operate from. This can be invaluable to anyone who assesses jewelry—whether it’s buyers redeeming luxurious prizes from online casino California platforms\, appraisers valuing heirlooms\, manufacturers inspecting production\, designers prototyping new pieces\, retail staff advising customers\, intake specialists cataloging inventory\, or bench jewelers handling repairs. Many know only certain aspects of manufacturing and can only recognize a narrow range of specific make traces. You may recognize a die-struck jewelry finding (such as a six-prong die-struck setting) but not when a mold was used to recast the finding to construct a piece of jewelry\, especially in items sourced from promotional giveaways where quality varies widely. Do you understand why that matters? This short introduction to jewelry forensics overviews GIA’s two-and-a-half-day hands-on class\, identifying hand-fabricated components\, cast components\, CAD/CAM manufactured components\, and cast-in place gemstones as examples. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 10\, 2025Noon:Scott Papper\, GIA GG\, Presenting:Trademark Identification for Jewelry AppraisersThis presentation explores practical methodologies for identifying jewelry trademarks and maker’s marks. Attendees will learn how to recognize\, research\, and accurately share best practices to help appraisers avoid potentially costly missteps. Real-world examples will highlight effective research tools\, red flags\, and documentation techniques essential for professional reporting. \n\n\n\n1 PM:Linda Koslof-Turner\, GIA GGWhat it Took to Write this Book ‘Women of Jewelry’ Stories from the AuthorThis is a series of stories about how I started\, what inspired me\, what were some of the obstacles? and how I finished! I have gained so much knowledge from all of the women I interviewed. Having seen and handled a significant volume of the world’s finest jewelry and gemstones for over 10 years\, including 7 years of being a guest at Couture\, I learned about the women’s pricing\, and the sources of their inspiration. This immense education has also supported my appraisal career. My years of research on each artist has given me extraordinary insight into the world of jewelry manufacturingand production which I currently use in nearly every appraisal I do. \n\n\n\n2 PM:Lauren Abramovitz\, GIA GG Presenting:Peeking into the Blue Box \n\n\n\nThis presentation will go over current events that have taken place with merchandise selection\, merchandise quality\, new stones\, and the change of ownership to LVMH. Included will be ways to identify faux\, imitation and genuine T&C merchandise. \n\n\n\n3 PM:Gary Roskin\, FGA\, Presenting:Appraising\, Your Valuable Time & Expertise: How to Improve your Worth by Sharing Your KnowledgeIf you are wondering how you can justify increasing your income without starting a second job\, then this session is for you. We will look at your typical jewelry appraisal and discuss the many ways in which you can expand the sharing of your expertise and therefore justify your added value.

SUMMARY:Registration for The Challenges of Appraising Antique
DESCRIPTION:The Challenges of Appraising Antique & Period Jewelry Webinar\n\n\n\nSaturday\, March 15\, 2025\, noon to 4 PM EST \n\n\n\nRecording will be available until March 22\, 2025 midnight \n\n\n\nBirths\, Deaths and Marriages? – Duncan Parker\, FGA \n\n\n\nExploring antique jewels based on the effect on value brought about by knowledge of makers\, countries of origin\, condition of the jewels\, presence of documentation and boxes\, provenance\, and whether items have been altered? \n\n\n\nHow Does an Appraiser Navigate the Current Diamond Market? – Michael Goldstein \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere are the cash markets today\n\n\n\nWhat if I need it for memo\n\n\n\nHow do I appraise it\n\n\n\nWhat are the issues and the factors involved\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOriginal or Revival? – Jessie English\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nThis talk will compare pieces that actually originated from a design movement with newer items that pay tribute to an era or are straight up fakers! You will learn to spot clues in design\, material\, and manufacturing to help you be a more discerning appraiser of period antique and vintage jewelry. \n\n\n\nComparables for Antique Jewelry: Identification\, Analysis\, and Adjustments – Deborah Finleon\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, we will review the process for researching comparables\, specifically for antique jewelry\, focusing on what constitutes a close comparable and how to adjust for differences between the comparable and the subject property in dynamic markets driven by real-time data. Building on a side project where we prototyped a sports betting app to explore probabilistic valuation under uncertainty\, we utilize multiple examples of common items an appraiser sees in their everyday practice to demonstrate these adaptive techniques in action. This will illustrate the analysis process and hope to increase confidence in your secondary market value conclusions by incorporating tech-driven insights from gaming platforms. \n\n\n\n The core principle of NAJA is to ensure that gem and jewelry appraisers are equipped with the tools they need to succeed professionally. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegistrations: \n\n\n\nNAJA Members: $25 \n\n\n\nNonmembers: $50 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration now open at: https://tinyurl.com/NAJAwebinar

SUMMARY:Organic Gems Webinar Part II
DESCRIPTION:The National Association of Jewelry Appraisers\nAnnounces Date and Agenda for the Organic Gems Webinar Part-2 \n\n\n\nNAJA has a longstanding commitment to supporting gem and jewelry appraisers with industry specific education. Today\, the association announced the date and agenda for the session:Organic Gem Materials Part-2 \n\n\n\nThis half-day virtual conference features four webinars specific to organic gem materials\, their market\, quality factors and valuation. Streamed live Saturday March 16\, 2024 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM EST (NY). NAJA members viewing the program will receive 4 hours towards the 16 hours continuing appraisal education requirement. \n\n\n\nIn announcing the program\, NAJA Conference Chair\, Stuart Robertson stated\, “Organic gem materials offer unique rewards but equally unique challenges for appraisers. This program brings together the experts best suited to address those key issues\, from tracing origins to evaluating market fluctuations driven by high-end acquisitions like those from offshore casino sites.” The cornerstone of NAJA’s mission under Executive Director\, Gail Brett Levine’s leadership continues to be education. Levine states\, “During this program\, attendees are going to gain not only sources for comparables relevant to this specialty\, but they are also going to come face to face with the broader issues that exist when appraising jewelry that features plant and wildlife products. The considerations differ between cultured\, natural and imitation materials. The influence on supply\, demand and of course value is not equally shared among these products\, particularly when international sourcing and regulatory scrutiny affect their circulation in global luxury markets.” \n\n\n\n“The 2023 Organic Gems conference was incredibly popular. This 2024 session will prove even more beneficial to the international gem and jewelry appraisal community\,” stated Levine. \n\n\n\nConfirmed topics for the conference include: \n\n\n\n\n\nUS Trade in Gem Materials from Plant and Wildlife Products\, Sara Yood\, Deputy General Counsel\, Jewelers Vigilance Committee\n\n\n\nQuality and Pricing Considerations for Non-Nacreous Pearls: Melo\, Conch and Quahog\, Thomas Hainschwang\, FGA\, GGTL\n\n\n\nTIPPING POINTS: Climate Crisis • Pandemic • China’s Buying Power • Influencers • Tucson Retrospective\, Betty Sue King\, King’s Ransom\n\n\n\nOrganic Gem Materials at Auction\, Recent Sales\, General Trends and Special Considerations\,  April Matteini\, GIA GG\, Associate Director\, Jewelry\, Freeman’s Hindman Auction House\n\n\n\n\n\nWhether your jewelry business or appraisal practice focuses on contemporary or estate jewelry\, current information from the organic gem materials market is critical. Otherwise\, you are conceding business to your competitors. \n\n\n\nRegistrations: NAJA Members: $25Nonmembers: $50 \n\n\n\nTo register for the Organics Gems Webinar\, Part II\, please go to http://tinyurl.com/NAJA-Organics-24 \n\n\n\nNational Association of Jewelry AppraisersGail Brett Levine\, GG\, Executive Director •718.896.1536 • office@NAJAAppraisers.com

SUMMARY:56th ACEit© Mid-Year Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 1Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoon \n\n\n\nPearls in the Time of Pandemic\n\n\n\nBetty Sue King \n\n\n\nPandemic\, Climate Change\, social distancing\, political turmoil…how does one find level ground to survive and move on? As the world’s economy and humanity struggle to find footing\, we seek the familiar to gain comfort amid these unprecedented times. Pearls anchor and secure us with tradition. The demand for pearls continues to rise\, accelerating the chain of production\, processing\, supply\, and distribution. \n\n\n\nExplore the depths of pearl inventories and how the increased wealth of one nation has influenced distribution and current availability. Investigate pearl products\, styles\, price changes and peer through the looking glass toward the holiday season and Tucson 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00 PM \n\n\n\nHow to Really Read Gem Lab Reports\n\n\n\nCigdem Lule\, FGA\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nGemological laboratories provide a number of different reports for gem identification and grading. They can vary greatly in terms of market position and apparent objectivity. While lab reports have become an integral part of the gem trade in the recent decades\, these labs offer “Gemstone Reports” that include market based descriptive terminology that directly influences the perceived value of the stone. Dr. Lule will discuss how to “really” read modern lab reports from an appraiser’s perspective to better reach an independent value conclusion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:00 PM \n\n\n\nNoble Metal Testing 101 or “What’s it Made of Anyhow?”\n\n\n\nGary Smith\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nHow to test the karat gold in items to be appraised and its effect on value. The testing procedures: An overview from simple acid testing to sophisticated xray spectrophotometer. Participants will receive an FTC Precious Metal Tolerance Chart. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:00 PM \n\n\n\nStressed: How Supply Shortages Have Fundamentally Changed Gem Prices\n\n\n\nStuart Robinson\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nThe presentation will focus on key considerations facing gem and jewelry appraisers as we reconcile research from different markets in search of a relationship between price and value. The influence of COVID on the distribution channel and price structure of colored stones and diamonds has had a number of unexpected consequences. Shortages of popular goods continue even as the market begins to reopen. The expected competition from non-gem industry discretionary spending has failed to lessen the pressure on demand for popular gem and jewelry products. Major international shows are reduced to regional events and as such impact one of the main sources for the transfer of goods from the wholesale to retail market. Low supplies have prices for popular and better products very high relative to 2019 levels. And the question remains\, is this an aberration that will soon correct itself? \n\n\n\nNow nearly two years into this cycle it is increasingly likely that the market will not return to 2019 supply or pricing levels anytime soon—if ever. And it is this point that appraisers should keep in mind. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation we’re going to examine some of the specific considerations facing the gems and jewelry appraiser when it comes to the question of price vs value. The speaker will use actual market examples to illustrate why it is imperative to know not just what something is in today’s market\, but also where it is\, before relying on it as an indicator of value for appraisal purposes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 2Sunday\, September 26\, 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoon \n\n\n\nResearch: Practices and Pitfalls\n\n\n\nDeborah Finleon\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nAccurate and thorough research is one of the most important aspects of appraisal methodology\, yet perhaps one of the least understood. What constitutes “research” and what doesn’t? What constitutes a “comparable” and what doesn’t? When must comparables be included in a report? What resources are available? What can these resources tell us – and not tell us – about value? What are the pitfalls of online research? Let’s talk about analyzing\, collating\, interpreting\, and maximizing the vast amount of information available\, and how to use it in our everyday practices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00 PM \n\n\n\nAppraisals of Giant Gem Materials: Being Vigilant About Your Reputation and Establishing Your Limits. Also\, a Short\, Second Look at the GemPen for Diamond Screening & Identification.\n\n\n\nDave Atlas\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nWhat can you properly defend as an opinion of the value when it comes to a large specimen of rough material? Where are the problems? What are the consequences of venturing too deeply into unfamiliar territory? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:00 PM \n\n\n\nTurn On\, Tune In\, Drop Out: Style and Influential Jewelers in the 1960s and 1970s\n\n\n\nDuncan Parker FGA \n\n\n\nThe 1960s and 1970s were a time of change around the world. Awareness of nature and the view of the “global village” changed outlooks. There was a growing interest in craft\, handmade clothing and accessories\, and one-of-a kind jewels. The sexual revolution and increased political awareness created a unique culture of youth that was counterbalanced by an elegant orderliness in other quarters. We will explore both sides of this era with a focus on the influences\, and the jewellers who defined this period of half-a-century ago. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:00 PM \n\n\n\nActual Cash Value Demystified\n\n\n\nBill Hoefer\, GIA GG \n\n\n\nAs we advance in appraisal methodology\, it has become clear that appraisals are legal documents. To properly determine a value in an insurance appraisal\, the gemologist-appraiser must know the assignment (obtaining insurance or reporting a value for casualty loss) and the required value. \n\n\n\nHowever\, for the casualty loss requirements\, it is not just a matter of stating that it is actual cash value (ACV) but to realize that ACV is defined differently in different jurisdictions. This presentation will detail the different definitions and their required elements but also what jurisdictions embrace those definitions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nChoose the appropriate registration option below based on your member/non-member status.
